Pausing Your Subscription

What pausing a subscription stops, what it does not refund, and when you are charged again after you resume.

If you are on Pro and between projects, you can pause your subscription instead of cancelling it. Founding Member and Early Adopter subscriptions can pause too. Casual cannot pause: cancel it instead, and subscribe again whenever you like.

Open Settings, choose the Subscription tab, and select Pause between projects. Pick the date your subscription resumes. A pause lasts up to one year, so the date can be at most a year away, and you can resume sooner yourself.

What pausing does

  • It stops future renewals. Nothing more is charged while you are paused.
  • The period you are in is already paid, and it is not refunded. Your renewal day is when a period is paid for.
  • Your subscriber features stay on until the end of the period you paid for, then pause. If you pause the day after your renewal, you keep them for the rest of that period. The Subscription tab checks the date with our payment provider and shows it before you confirm, and again while you are paused. If you have no paid time left (for example, you resumed after your paid period ended and have not been charged again yet), your features pause as soon as you pause, and the tab says so.
  • A payment that was already due before you paused is still collected. For example, if a renewal payment failed and is being retried, pausing does not cancel it.
  • Your work is untouched. Every game, session and playtest record stays exactly where it is.
  • Your games are read-only while your features are paused. Once your paid period is over, you and your collaborators can still open and read everything, including the Design Journal and replays, but nobody can change your games, start or play a session of them, or make a new game. A table that is still open locks and says why. You can still close a game to others: turn off Link access, remove a collaborator, revoke an invite, or delete the game. Everything opens up again the moment you resume.
  • Link access pauses with your features. Games you share by link stop opening to visitors when your paid period ends, and open again when you resume, with nothing to turn back on. See Sharing Your Game.

If your card is failing, pay first

You cannot pause while a payment is still owed. If a renewal payment failed, it is retried automatically, and pausing would not stop that payment, so the Pause between projects button is replaced by a notice with two ways to pay:

  • Update card opens the billing page, where you can change the card on file and pay the unpaid invoice.
  • Pay invoice now opens the unpaid invoice, where you can pay it with any card.

Once it is paid, you can pause straight away. There is nothing else to do. The same applies for the hour or so after a renewal while its payment is still being taken: pausing then is refused with a message saying so, and works once the payment goes through.

Resuming

You can resume at any time from the same tab. Otherwise the pause ends on its own on the date you picked. We email you a few days before it ends.

If you resume before your paid period ends, nothing changes that you would notice: your features never switched off, and your next charge is the renewal date you already had.

Resuming does not charge you on the day you resume. Your renewal day never moves while you are paused, so your next charge is your first renewal date on or after the day you resume. For example, if you renew on the 18th of each month and resume on the 5th, your card is next charged on the 18th, and your subscriber features are back from the 5th.

Pausing again

After you resume, you can pause again once your next renewal has been paid. Until then the Subscription tab says when that is, in place of the pause button.

Pauses from before the one-year limit

Pauses started before pauses had a one-year limit had no end date. Each now ends one year after the start of the billing period it was paused in, so within a year of when it started, or one week after the limit arrived if that year had already passed. Each person with one is emailed their new date.

Pausing or cancelling?

Cancelling ends the subscription at the end of the period you paid for, and you keep subscriber features until then. Coming back later means subscribing again. Pausing keeps your subscription and saved card, so coming back is one click.

While a cancelled subscription is still running, you cannot start a second one, because you would pay twice for the same days. To keep it, renew it from Manage Subscription on the Subscription tab. Once it has ended, you can subscribe again from the pricing page.
